Squeaker turned two yesterday! We had cake, candles, streamers, presents, a party, kids, favors, food, chaos, multiple phone calls from relatives across the country. He had a good day.
And, as promised, we called Squeaker's birthmom. They share a birthday, so we wished her both a Happy New Year and a Happy Birthday. It was emotional on all sides, but also very natural. We basically picked up the conversation where we left off 2 years ago. She seems to be in a really good space now, compared to the day we met them both. We were surprised to learn she's moved across the country, but really pleased to learn she's found a place to live, found a job, made a new life for herself. She told us she thinks about Squeaker every day, and although she cries a lot when she thinks about it, she's still sure that adoption was the right choice for both of them at the time.
I asked her if she wanted to talk with Squeaker. "Is that him I hear now?" I could hear the nerves in her voice. "Yes, do you want to wait a few minutes?" "Yes." So we talked about other things, her feelings, our feelings, Squeaker's traits that come from his birth family (sleeplessness is genetic!!). We talked for a few minutes, then the Mister spoke to her.
And then, we put Squeaker on the phone. With no prompting whatsoever, he burst out singing Happy Birthday! I grabbed another tissue.
When he ran out of steam and I took the phone back, I asked her if she was okay. There was a long pause. Then, very slowly, she said "That ... was SO cool."
We wanted an open adoption for a lot of reasons, but that moment right there? Perfection.
that IS so cool. it must have been so emotional for you all. how wonderful, all of it.
