Just a quick post to point out the new button I've added to the left column of this page -- Open Adoption Bloggers. Check it out.
Adoption can be tricky in any case, but open adoption is a relatively new phenomenon and those of us whose children joined us through open adoption (or who placed a child in an open adoption) are often making things up as we go along. Some of the learnings from international adoptions or closed domestic adoptions applies to us, but much of it does not. There is a whole new layer of relationships to be negotiated and issues that our children will (or won't) face that has not yet been fully documented in the literature. Nor is the world generally as aware of what an open adoption is. We have to do a lot of learning, but we also have to spend a lot of time educating our families and our communities.
Heather was prescient enough to see the need for this subgroup of the adoption community -- adoptive parents and first parents -- to have its own blogroll category. I'm proud to be part of it.
And already it's working. Some of the OABs I know already (hi, luna!), but I've also been contacted by several bloggers I hadn't met before, and even some open adoption parents who don't blog, but who have important things to share. I want to give a special shout-out to Pottergrrl -- a friend IRL whose new blog is going to be a great addition to the conversation. A community is forming, and it's exciting to see!
Thanks for spreading the word! I'm so glad connections are already being made. That's wonderful.
